PROMOTING THE WELFARE OF ALL ANIMALS

SPCAs in South Africa

SPCAs DO NOT GET FUNDING FROM GOVERNMENT AND RELY ON THE GENEROSITY OF PUBLIC SUPPORT

The SPCA is the only Animal Welfare Organisation in South Africa which is governed by an Act of Parliament, namely the SPCA Act, 169 of 1993.
  • Every Society has to be registered with the Department of Social Development and Welfare (NPO). We receive NO government support and rely on the Public to continue in our quest for a cruelty free South Africa.
  • The SPCA plays a major role in promoting and setting up of Codes of Conduct, doing research and compiling of information – using the three ‘R's – Reduce,
  • Refine and Replace animals in research and wildlife capacities;
  • Enforcing these codes as well as serving on numerous Committees and Welfare Groups;
  • The only animal welfare organisation to be registered with the Department of Labour for qualifying inspectors;
  • The only Animal Welfare Organisation with a National Controlling body – being directed democratically by the separate Societies;
  • An Animal Welfare Organisation with an executive director who is a full member of WSPA (World Society for the Protection of Animals);
  • The SPCA is the biggest / strongest local Animal Welfare Organisation in South Africa to deal with National Issues like import & export of wildlife – Tuli Elephant Case, etc.;
  • An Animal Welfare Organisation which is not influenced by financial gain, but rather ensuring that principles and policies are upheld – to PREVENT CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.

The SPCA is YOURS - become involved and make a difference!

COMMUNITY INVESTMENT
SPCAs exist because of public concern over the welfare of animals in their own community and recognising the need for an organisation to represent these animals.
Local community serve on the management Committees of SPCAs and are responsible for the smooth and legal daily operation of the Society (investing their free time), including fundraising for individual Societies and communication with the local Authorities.

WHO IS THE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE?
Members of the SPCA elect a management Committee of a Society at an Annual General Public Meeting. These elected members have to comply with certain protocols and must be committed to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
The aims and objectives must be followed, one of which is to recognise the need for animal welfare care within communities, education, sterilisation of animals and providing suitably adequate shelter to animals in need of such.
Another is to ensure that the Animals Protection Act is enforced when needed – and compromising SPCA Policy is not allowed.

UPLIFTING YOUR COMMUNITY
(How You Can Help)

Become a meMber of your local SPCA – It costs an annual minimal amount and you have a vote at the annual general and special general meetings – some Societies offer discount prices, monthly or quarterly magazines and many more optional surprises:-
  • Volunteer your services to the Society by assisting with animals in kennels, administrational duties, both in the office and with annual obligations, educational programs, and many more – even becoming a volunteer Inspector;
  • Financial assistance by debit orders or organising fundraising events – with the written consent and approval of the Society;
  • Reporting issues that may upset you or your friends / family relating to any issue involving animals;
    If you are a professional person, donating your services, whether legal, auditing of books, secretarial, veterinary services, architectural and building services, counselling services to SPCA staff and public who may have been involved or a witness to a cruelty case, computerised needs, and any other profession that may assist the Society in the operations of its aims and objectives.
