CONFRONTING CRUELTY

CROSS-BORDER TRAFFICKING CONTINUES

Puppies and dogs destined for Namibia and Angola were removed from the hot, cramped and totally unacceptable conditions in the back of a Corsa bakkie in the early morning of Thursday 02 February at the Vioolsdrif border post. The twelve privately-bred canines included puppies as well as adult dogs of large breeds.

Paperwork relating to the animals is described as “suspect” and there were no import permits. In welfare terms, the conditions were deplorable and criminal charges in terms of the Animals Protection Act will be laid. Three Angolan nationals have been arrested.

ENQUIRIES RELATING TO THE VISUAL OF DOG WITH FACE BLOWN OFF BY A FIREWORK
Calls are being received regarding a photograph of a dog as detailed above and the photograph itself is now circulating is what we refer to as “pass it on to everyone you know” chain-mails on the e-mail system.
This photograph was sourced from the USA, was placed on Facebook and duly taken up.
This horrific event did not take place in South Africa.
We understand the outrage of everyone who sees this visual but ask SPCAs to advise anyone who enquires that forwarding it serves little purpose other than to upset others and arguably to put shocking ideas into the heads of irresponsible and cruel people.
Calls in mails to ask “what is the SPCA doing about this” are misplaced as we again emphasise that the incident did not occur in South Africa. There is no indication of the time factor (it could have happened years ago). Our resources are already under severe pressure at this time of the year yet they are being stretched further by having to respond to mails and calls from concerned people.
We ask you to urge that this visual and any attendant mails are not circulated.
People with strong anti-fireworks views are invited to sign the anti-fireworks pledge on this page. The petition route has previously been taken without success.
You are welcome to advise everyone that the SPCA movement believes the solution lies with a tightening up local by-laws and strict enforcement. People with concerns are asked to work with and through local Councillors and ratepayers groups.

LET’S MAKE 2011 ANIMAL-SUPPORTIVE

Even though the festive season is over, the National Council of SPCAs wishes to keep momentum going and asks everyone for support.

Please see how YOU can assist to improve the lives of animals: - those you live with, those in your neighbourhood and those that the SPCA movement strives to help on an ongoing basis.

With your help the National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) and the SPCAs country-wide can conduct more investigations, can expand campaigns, increase education and can lessen the suffering of so many animals. The SPCA movement enforces animal welfare legislation and can lay criminal charges against offenders. Click here for more information.

CELEBRATE THE WILDNESS OF WILD ANIMALS

Listen to the soundtrack by clicking here and also follow the lyrics by clicking here ...

On 1 March 2011 the NSPCA launched its “Celebrate the Wildness of Wild Animals” Campaign encouraging people not to support circuses which have wild animal acts. Wild animals should not be subjected to the conditions of circus life, which involve forced transport, human handling, noise, trailer movement, confinement and crowds of people. We do not believe that performing inappropriate and unnatural tricks in the name of entertainment fosters respect for wild animals. Wild animals belong in the wild! We invite you to join the many famous celebrities and individuals who have joined forces with us and sign the pledge NOT TO SUPPORT WILD ANIMAL ACTS IN CIRCUSES.

GENERATING INCOME

The National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) receives no government funding and never has. This is consistent with the financial status and pattern of all SPCAs in South Africa.

The NSPCA does not receive and has never received any income from a Municipality. Any SPCAs who do receive income from these sources are being paid for services rendered and are not receiving a grant. To read more click here ...

THE NSPCA WILL END THE CRUELTY OF SOW CRATES

MISLEADING THE PUBLIC AND THE PRODUCERS

The National Council of SPCAs is taking the South African Pork Producers’ Organisation (SAPPO) to task over the issue of gestation crates for pigs. SAPPO issued a media statement on 28 January stating “The following time frames are being discussed for the phasing out of gestation crates: - As of 1st January 2020 pregnant sows may only be kept in gestation crates for a maximum of 63 days.” This is unacceptable.
