NSPCA SUPPORTS ANTI-POACHING EFFORTS
The NSPCA Wildlife Unit attended the Lead SA Rhino Summit in Johannesburg on 23 August 2010 opposing the slaughter of rhinos and giving its support to the conservation of South Africa’s rhino populations. 180 rhinos have been killed this year – almost one a day! Anyone with information about rhino poaching is requested to provide information to the national anti-poaching hotline and the intelligence will be forwarded to the National Wildlife Crime Reaction Unit. The number to SMS is 32211 or phone 082 404 2128.
RABBITS STOMPED TO DEATH –
RABBIT-MEAT PROVIDER BEING CRIMINALLY CHARGED
Senior Inspector Kay Prinsloo of the National Council of SPCA’s Farm Animal Unit was assaulted twice on the Kempton Park property of a rabbit-meat producer.
The visit to the property was a routine inspection. The owner initially denied access and the SPCA Kempton Park motivated and requested a warrant to enter the premises. This was duly issued by a Kempton Park Magistrate.
The property owner continued to refuse entry to the personnel from the NSPCA and the SPCA Kempton Park when they returned with the warrant but access was eventually gained.
Senior Inspector Prinsloo was taken aback at the method used to kill the rabbits: - stomping on their heads until they died. The property owner admitted this and then demonstrated how he did this in front of Senior Inspector Denise Stewart of the SPCA Kempton Park. Before she could intervene and stop him, the man had placed a sick rabbit on the floor and stomped on its head. Its head was almost flattened and it was killed.
Senior Inspector Kay Prinsloo emergency slaughtered two rabbits who were moribund and in her opinion needed to be put out of their suffering. Two rabbits were removed from the property and taken to a veterinarian. Six dead rabbits were found on the property which holds an estimated thousand rabbits according to a worker there.
The perpetrator cannot at this stage be named but it is confirmed that criminal charges in terms of the Animals Protection Act will be laid against the Kempton Park man whose property is used to breed rabbits, kill them and sell the bodies for human consumption.
t is a large-scale breeding operation of rabbits that are killed and sold for human consumption. It is alleged that restaurants and a butchery including in Johannesburg’s northern suburbs receive meat from this source. The NSPCA is currently following up leads on recipient outlets as health issues arise. Slaughter in a registered abattoir is a legal requirement regarding meat sold for human consumption.

You’ve heard the cow, now please make yourself heard and forward your objections and disgust urgently to all of the following addresses: pa.minister@daff.gov.za , minister@daff.gov.za , cdfahdm@daff.gov.za , dave@safeedlot.co.za , sybillah@daff.gov.za , keithr@daff.gov.za , dg@daff.gov.za .
We often have the perpetrators throwing in the red herrings - that is ‘ear notching is more painful’, ‘branding is a deterrent to stock thieves’, ‘few feedlots that do this’ – this is irrelevant to the actual case at hand - cruelty caused by hot iron face branding.
The Animal Identification Act states that animals must be branded – the Act makes no mention of the face and advises where 1st/2nd/3rd/4th owner should put their brand – surely this should be sufficient.
Certain states in America have a ruling that acknowledge face branding is cruel and in conflict with their animal laws; certain states in Australia have also banned this practice; as have New Zealand.
So why do we appear to be taking steps backwards – perhaps because of the possible damage to the skin/hide?? – Why don’t we always give the animal the benefit of the doubt??
CATALONIA BANS BULLFIGHTS
It was announced on Wednesday 28 July 2010 that Catalonia has become the first part of mainland Spain to ban bullfighting. A 135-member regional parliament voted to approve a ban proposed by animal rights activists.
The message sent out is that bullfights are not an intrinsic or untouchable part of Spanish culture and identity but a form of animal abuse.
Spain`s Canary Islands had already outlawed bullfights back in 1991, as part of a more general animal protection law, but that decision had gone largely unnoticed - the Catalan move, however, has ignited discussion and divided opinion across the rest of the country.
The official policy of the SPCA movement in South Africa is “opposed to the use of animals in any form of combat whether against man or animal.”
REPORTING CRUELTY - PLEASE DO IT DIRECTLY!
The NSPCA issues a heartfelt plea: - report cases of animal abuse/cruelty/neglect directly to us. In the interest of the animals and the urgency of assisting them please DO NOT POST REPORTS OF THIS KIND ON WEB SITES.
There are many web sites which have a facility for reporting crimes. The number of these sites continues to grow. Given that the Internet is so wide, individuals may post a report on a site thinking it is local or even national when in fact they are reporting on a website in another country.
“Crimeline” systems work by reporting matters to the SAPS and attract informants due to their undertaking of anonymity. But in the case of suffering animals, anonymity is already guaranteed and working through third parties simply extends the length of time before the matter can be actioned. Not all web sites are read or administered with the regularity that people may think.
REPORT CRUELTY QUICKLY AND DIRECTLY – FOR THE ANIMALS’ SAKES, PLEASE!
SAVE TIME TO PREVENT FURTHER SUFFERING.
