SAPS – APPRECIATION FOR RESPONSIBILITY
The National Council of
SPCAs (N
SPCA) thanks the South African Police Service (SAPS) for co-operation and for responsibility on National Police Day which took place on 29 January 2010 in relation to the slaughtering of animals.
The N
SPCA had been advised that cattle would be slaughtered at the event in Bloemfontein and so the Farm Animal Unit approached the Free State Head of Provincial Communications of the SAPS who liaised with four SAPS Directors and advised that 30 cattle were to be taken to a local abattoir for slaughter and the meat used to feed individuals at National Police Day.
This instance is a classic example of how our organisations can communicate and work together. The N
SPCA acts in terms of our mandate and we have a responsibility- legal and moral – to step in and establish facts.
It remains our principle that we would rather be contacted and not needed than be needed
and not contacted.
