SPCA WELKOM IN DIRE NEED
SPCAs depend on local communities for support. Income from individuals and businesses is their life-blood to enable animals to be assisted, for which there is an enormous need in our country.
The National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) continues to urge people that the economic recession is impacting on the SPCA movement to an unprecedented extent.
The SPCA in Welkom is the latest to advise that they are in desperate need, having held an emergency meeting and calling upon everyone to assist. “The Pamatsi mine has closed down in the area without the people being paid so you can imagine the impact this has had on our SPCA. Although our region faces serious problems, we do stick together and help one another when necessary,” said Chairman
Norma Scott, adding that the
SPCA
Bloemfontein assisted by donating a bakkie-load of pet food. “But they are also facing financial problems.”
An urgent and heartfelt appeal is issued for assistance which can take many forms.
www.nspca.co.za carries details of the contact and banking details of every SPCA. Electronic transfers can be made including by credit card.
Practical help and support are also valued which may include the donation of items for sale, items to assist the animals (food, blankets, bowls etc).
It is reiterated that SPCAs do not receive income from the government. Any income from Municipalities is not a grant but a payment for services rendered such as the collection and caring for strays. Income is received from Lotto but relates to specific projects or capital expenditure. Please don’t forget that overheads such as fuel, phone bills and electricity have to be paid for any SPCA to remain active.
The message from the NSPCA is to come out and support your local SPCA and the SPCA movement as a whole. Every cent makes a difference. Signing up for a debit order or stop order ensures reliable, budgetable income on a year-round basis.
There is no scare-mongering in the statement that a crisis is being faced. There is
no talk of closing down because all involved will do their utmost to ensure this does not happen but the seriousness of the situation for many SPCAs is dire.
